Recess Woes

I can hardly believe how much my five year old is thriving in kindergarten. There were a few struggles in the very beginning with recess. My son had a hard time navigating such a new social format. In pre-school there was a very small play yard with no more than 10-20 children in it at any given time. Most of the kids he had known since he was two, so there wasn't a lot of social dynamics he had to worry about. During the fist two weeks of kindergarten I asked him who he was playing with at recess and he would say no one. I emailed the teacher (who is unaware of any autism diagnosis in the past) and said I was concerend. She did say he wasn't very interested in playing with the kids and would stay by her the whole time. Apparently, recess was the only place he was having a hard time socially. After a good cry, I spent time with Ty and explained some ways to make new friends at recess. He just wasn't using the right approach. He now loves recess and always makes sure to play with friends. Just because he no longer has "autism" doesn't mean he won't struggle in certain social situations. It does mean that I will continue to help him navigate it.
